After the fall of Syria’s Bashar al-Assad, heartwarming videos coming out of Syria flooded social media of prisoners and political prisoners escaping and being reunited with their families after tens of thousands people had “disappeared” since the conflict began back in 2011. But at the same time, Israel's terrifying further encroachment on its neighbor was also already in motion.
After Assad fled to Russia (classic), Israel has been trying to take even more Syrian land through violent means. This week Israel has attacked Syria more than 400 times, stating they were bombing to eliminate Iranian military targets. "If the new regime in Syria allows Iran to re-establish itself, or allows the transfer of Iranian weapons to Hezbollah – we will respond forcefully and we will exact a heavy price," threatened Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
It appears that the U.S. has, for the most part, tried to stay out of it but we know where they stand on assisting Israel in bombing any regimes they deem a threat.
There aren’t always clear heroes and villains in complex conflicts like Syrias but there are more clear winners and losers. And unfortunately if Israel gets its way, the Syrian people will continue to lose.
