a New Jersey Archbishop decided to sell church assets in order to build himself a new 3,000 square foot extension to his retirement house.
Archbishop John Myers is planning on spending half a million dollars from the sales of underused church property in order build this extension that will include a library and an indoor exercise pool and what has been described as a hot tub, because nothing says "I'm living in the shadow of Jesus Christ, like an indoor spa."
The house itself is nothing like the austere dwellings of the faithful because it features 5 beds, 3 baths, a 3 stall garage, an elevator and a swimming pool. Maybe the pool is there for baptism. Oh did I mention that this house is on 8 acres of prime Newark real estate? I do declare!
Luckily Archbishop Myers is being called out on the level of bling that would make Lil
Wayne blush by many fellow Catholics.
Parishioners are practicing the austerity Myers refuses to by cutting off donations to the church.
The archbishops spokesman in the definition of irony appealed to these non-tithers by saying "By withdrawing their support, who are they harming? The very people that we as a Church are pledged to help."
Oh you mean the poor? Unless that million dollar residence is going to be used as a homeless shelter, I don't see it being used to help the poor.
In an editorial in the National Catholic Reporter had said the "arrogance and self-importance" required for such a use of diocese assets was "breathtaking".
"This is clearly the material of episcopal scandal, hedonism undisguised, a level of clerical privilege that knows no bounds."
