The Christie administration decided to throw around its weight in order to ban Tesla motors from selling its cars in New Jersey.
Now it's not an outright ban on Tesla itself, but the rule basically says that all car companies in New Jersey have to sell their vehicles through franchised dealers instead of directly to customers. Tesla has that direct sales model and owns its own stores. It's really an underhanded de facto ban.
Tesla says it didn't even know about the proposed rules change until just before it passed.
The Commission, which passed the rule unanimously, is chaired by a Christie nominee, and includes three members of Christie's cabinet.
Christie spokesman Kevin Roberts told the AP that officials made clear to Tesla that the company would have to go through the New Jersey legislature to legalize its direct sales model.
Let me interpret that. If Tesla wants to play ball in Jersey, they have to bribe the politicians more than the auto dealers already had.
According to the Huffington post: The ban comes after a big lobbying push by the auto dealers. The New Jersey Coalition of
Automotive Retailers spent upwards of $150,000 on lobbying efforts last year and dozens of individual car dealers and dealership groups donated heavily to the governor. In all, Christie received more than $60,000 in donations from dealerships.
On that fact alone, there isn't any other conclusions I can draw on this.
It's not just libby mcliberson's that aren't happy about this. It's also actual conservatives that see that is a government intruding into businesses in order to protect another business that has just happened to lobby heavily to protect their own interests.
