7:58Now PlayingJohn Fetterman rode Pennsylvania progressives to a Senate seat in 2022. Two years later, his net approval among Pennsylvania Democrats has collapsed from +68 to -40 — a 108-point swing that CNN's Harry Enten says has "no historical analog." The coalition he used to get elected is now preparing to primary him out.
John Fetterman didn't drift — he chose. He visited Mar-a-Lago after the 2024 election.
He became the Senate's most vocal pro-military-operation Democrat on Gaza, opposing calls for a ceasefire while his progressive base watched. He pivoted on immigration. And then, to top it all off, he told the public that the Democratic Party runs on "Trump Derangement Syndrome." Every one of those moves was a deliberate signal to his original coalition: you are not who I'm performing for anymore.
The Quinnipiac poll that CNN's Harry Enten broke down is the receipt. Plus 68 to minus 40. That 108-point swing puts Fetterman below Chuck Schumer, below Kyrsten Sinema right before she left the party, and below the approval ratings of incumbent senators who actually lost their primaries. Enten searched for a historical comparison and came up empty. There isn't one. What Fetterman has done to his standing with his own voters is, in a word, unprecedented.
The political consequence is already in motion. Enten was unequivocal: if Fetterman runs for re-election as a Democrat, he will face a competitive primary challenge. Pennsylvania progressives knocked on doors, donated, and stayed up late watching him hold off a MAGA challenger in 2022. They believed in the hoodie and the Braddock story and the working-class progressive identity. What they got was a senator who started sounding like a Fox News contributor in a zip-up. The numbers say they noticed. And they're done.
