The USDA's own Census of Agriculture shows nearly 150,000 farms erased in five years and over 21 million acres of farmland gone — absorbed by corporate consolidation. Chapter 12 farm bankruptcy filings surged 46% in 2025 alone. Montana lost 14% of its farms. The land didn't vanish — it was swallowed by operations already worth millions.
This is the extraction machine at work. The same administration that canceled programs helping young and beginning farmers access land handed $44.3 billion in direct payments to the largest commodity operations with no strings attached. OnlyFarms.gov wasn't a celebration of farming — it was a PR stunt designed to paper over the biggest wave of farm consolidation in a generation.
The comeuppance came from inside the house. Thomas Massie, a Republican cattle farmer from Kentucky, publicly shamed the White House for spending taxpayer money on a porn parody while his constituents were going bankrupt. Marjorie Taylor Greene piled on. The site was pulled. But the policy that's killing small farms? Still running.
