The conventional picture of glacial retreat - a margin slowly moving backward as temperatures rise - does not fully account for what the landscape beneath the Laurentide and Cordilleran ice sheets actually shows. The evidence points toward something more complex and more catastrophic - not just marginal recession from the edges, but point centers of melting occurring simultaneously from within the ice sheet itself. Drumlins, the distinctive elongated landforms left behind beneath glaciers, are identified as the key to locating and understanding those internal melt points - physical signatures left in the landscape that reveal not just where the ice was, but how and where it gave way.
