The Republicans who control the state of Florida have spent the last two years letting as many Floridians as possible die. And of course, in a state where elections are always tight, roughly 70,000 dead citizens, most of whom are Republicans, you probably need to try to shore up more support as you head into a very contentious midterm election year. And that is exactly what Republicans in this state are trying to do with a new $4.8 billion giveaway to major corporations here in the state of Florida. Nearly $5 billion that our Republican governor Ron DeSantis and the Republican controlled legislature is pushing this year, in order to let corporations know that you can do whatever the hell you want here in the state of Florida, we're gonna give you all of this free fun money, even as our citizens are dying and suffering from economic depression, we're giving it all to you.
So that of course, you'll give some back to us for our campaigns and we can cruise to an easy victory later this year. That is what this is all about. But again, I cannot stress enough the suffering that the people of Florida are currently going through. There's a big scandal actually in my area where I live right now, which of course is Matt Gaetz's district and he's done nothing about it, with a company called Florida Power and Light. They recently took over our local power utility and they're of course, big down in South Florida. They kind of monopolized, took over all the power companies up here in Northwest Florida. And now we've watched our rates go through the roof and in an area that is very poor, like where we live here, very elderly, people are lashing out. They can't afford their power bills anymore. They're having to forego their medication.
Some of them retired for years having to go back to work just to be able to pay their power bill, because the Republicans in the state of Florida allowed this merger to happen that screwed all of us. Meanwhile, across the entire state of Florida, real estate prices have risen faster here than any other state in the country in the past year. Rents are being raised all over the state of Florida, so people are feeling the financial squeeze and getting screwed. And the Republican response is let's give $5 billion to corporations. Here's a list. This list was provided by Thomas Kennedy writing for Occupy Democrats, if the name's familiar, I did interview him on the Ring of Fire podcast recently, you can check that out on our YouTube channel here. But anyway, I wanna read you this list of tax breaks. So you understand how insane they truly are. There's $3.2 billion right off the top in SB 1090, which is basically just the tax giveaway to Florida's most profitable co, corporations.
There's $761 million, which is a tax break for timeshare developers like Disney and Marriott. $205 million, which is a tax break for defense companies, such, such as Northrop Grumman and software companies like Microsoft. $163 million, which is a tax break for the corporations and multi-millionaires that buy private jets. So even though in the 2017 Republican tax cut bill, there's already a massive tax cut if you buy a private jet, the state of Florida is giving you an additional tax cut. If you've got the money to buy a private jet, why shouldn't you save a few dollars.
