9:58Now PlayingSince the killing of George Floyd, there has been a growing call for the removal of qualified immunity. It's a legal shield that keeps police officers and other public officials from being sued.
Many states have started limiting the legal process. Damaso Reyes, a freelance journalist and editor for NY Amsterdam News, joined Marc Lamont Hill on "Black News Tonight" to discuss qualified immunity. Hill said police have served a different purpose to the Black community, dating back centuries.
"The doctrine has certainly been expanded," Reyes said citing the Supreme Court's creation and expansion of the initiative, he said lawyers question why police officers and politicians have a higher level of protection.
