8:07Now PlayingFormer Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin will be sentenced on Friday for the murder of George Floyd. In April, a jury found Chauvin guilty of third-degree murder, second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He faces up to 30 years in prison.
BNC legal expert Candace Kelley joins Sharon Reed and Shannon LaNier on “Start Your Day” to discuss what the public can expect to hear from Chauvin’s sentencing.
“Generally, when someone is convicted on a crime as serious as this, they serve about two-thirds of the sentence,” Kelley reveals. “If we are looking at 30 years, we are talking about 20 years served. And we have to give him credit for the time served because [Chauvin] has been behind bars since he was arrested.”
There will also be impact statements from Floyd’s family.
BNC’s special live coverage of the Chauvin sentencing will air beginning at 2 pm EST.
