Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month With an Afro-Latina Superhero

In honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day and Hispanic Heritage Month, “Black News Tonight” host Marc Lamont Hill gives viewers a look at the amazing fictional character “La Borinqueña.”

The character was created by graphic novelist Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, who joins Hill to reveal the inspiration and real-world impact behind this Afro-Latina superhero. La Borinqueña calls on the power of her African and Indigenous roots to help save Puerto Rico and the world.

She's also the face of the best-selling graphic novel series of the same name, which puts courage and imagination at the forefront, as it tackles issues such as race, gender and climate change. Miranda-Rodriguez said he created the character in 2016 as an “opportunity to truly engage people in the discourse around decolonization of Puerto Rico.” It was the first book to come out as a graphic novel series that addresses such glaring issues, as well as the first Afro-Puerto Rican to have her own comic book series.
