6:46Now PlayingFollowing the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery in 2020, former Maryland public school system Superintendent Dr. Andrea Kane issued a simple, electrifying statement.
“There is no denying that police brutality and racism exist in our country. Racism is alive in our country, our state, in Queen Anne’s County, and our schools,” she said in June 2020. Dr. Kane, Queen Anne’s County public schools’ first Black superintendent, was initially met with an overwhelming amount of support and gratitude — feelings that have since changed.
White parents raging against critical race theory launched a crusade to have her fired, which has featured racist hate mail, online harassment and Dr. Kane’s decision to move for her safety. In June, one year after she penned the letter, Dr. Kane announced she was stepping down. The former superintendent, now a professor of practice at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, joins “Prime” host Charles Blow to discuss all that’s happened.
