9:17Now PlayingOn this day 55 years ago, one of the most important and impactful Black organizations in the U.S. was born, known then as the Black Panther Party for Self Defense.
Famous for their Black berets, fists in the air, Afro hairstyles and military formations, the organization was founded in Oakland, California by then-college students Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton in 1966. Their efficiency in grassroots organizing and firm stance for Black power, liberation and revolution inspired Black people across the globe, and at the same time, made them a target for the FBI. Historian and Black Panther scholar Yohuru Williams joins Hill to discuss the party’s genesis and lasting legacy.
