At the stroke of midnight, Barbados became the world's newest republic. The island nation is the latest country to cut ties with its colonial past. For centuries, Barbados produced sugar for the British empire, harvested by the backbreaking work of enslaved Africans. Barbados gained independence in 1966, but self-government took much longer.
