Dec 1, 20211:10Now PlayingIt is day three of our Road Trip series, where BNC looks at excellence in education and the HBCU family.
The very first HBCU, Cheney University, was founded in Pennsylvania in 1837 when Black students were prohibited from attending existing colleges and universities. Today, there are more than 100 HBCUs across the country serving nearly 300,000 students each year.
Lezli Bakersville, the CEO of the National Association For Equal Opportunity in Higher Education, joins "Start Your Day" to discuss the work she does on behalf of all HBCUs. She says, "We're not trying to get all students to go into Wall Street, corporate America to make the most dollars. But we want our students to follow their passions and wherever they go to realize their responsibility to make a difference in the lives of others."
