However, those ties have now been severed as Barbados overnight became the world’s newest republic.
Barbados was the first British slave society and among the first of its kind in the world with enslaved people being brought into the country from West Africa.
While all societies in the hemisphere had enslaved people, Barbados was the first to be built and sustained totally from the enslavement of Africans, with almost no other system of economic development.
Pop sensation Rihanna was honored as a “national hero” by the island’s prime minister.
