Dec 7, 20217:51Now PlayingA new study is confirming what many have suspected for some time about just how much codeswitching at work impacts Black professionals.
According to a new study in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, “Black employees are perceived as more professional when they adjust their behavior to mirror white norms.”
The study found that when white participants were presented with audio, visual or texts of fictitious Black professionals, the white respondents perceived the Black employees who codeswitched their behavior, style of speech, name selection or hairstyles to white norms, as more professional employees.
Julianne Malveaux, dean of the College of Ethnic Studies at California State University Los Angeles, joins Charles Blow on “Prime” to discuss.
