20-Year-Old Girl Arrested for DUI after Car Crash in Sarasota, FL

Around 2:53 AM on October 22, 2022, Officer Kenniston with the Sarasota Police Department responded to a single vehicle crash at Bay Island Park. Upon arrival, she was able to make contact with 20-year-old Sallina, who was the driver of the vehicle. Another officer had been speaking with Sallina to gather information, and Officer Kenniston began her DUI investigation. A witness had led police to the scene of the crash and confirmed that Sallina was the driver of the vehicle. Sallina admitted to the other officer that she was under the influence of alcohol. Officer Kenniston also observed front-end damage on the passenger side of Sallina’s vehicle.

Upon making contact with Sallina, Officer Kenniston noticed indicators of impairment and asked Sallina to perform field sobriety exercises. She started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, and she observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test, and Sallina failed to touch heel-to-toe on each step and turned improperly. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Sallina failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion.

Based on the motor vehicle accident, Sallina’s admission to consuming alcohol, the witness statements, and her inability to satisfactorily perform the field sobriety exercises, Officer Kenniston placed Sallina under the arrest for driving under the influence. After she was placed under arrest, she was transported to jail. An officer read her the implied consent warnings and she agreed to submit breath samples. Sallina’s breath samples revealed a BAC level of 0.148%, 0.142%, which was well above the legal limit of 0.02% for drivers less than 21 years of age. After submitting breath samples, Sallina was issued citations for driving under the influence and careless driving.

Court records indicate that the disposition date for this case was on February 9, 2023. On October 26, 2022, a cash bond of $120 was posted. On November 10, 2022, Sallina agreed to a deferred prosecution agreement to eventually downgrade the DUI charge. On February 9, 2023, Sallina pleaded no contest and the charge was amended to reckless with alcohol. An affidavit to reinstate her driver’s license was filed on July 23, 2023. The defendant has been assessed a total of $910.63 in fines and fees.
