20:09Now PlayingAround 5:22 on May 28, 2024, officers with the Hoboken Police Department were dispatched to a report of a shoplifting at ShopRite on 900 Madison Street. They entered the store around 5:35 PM and they walked upstairs to the loss prevention office. In the loss prevention office, they met with the store’s detective as well as the alleged shoplifter, who was identified as 36-year-old Alexander.
The loss prevention official informed the officers that the man attempted to leave the store without paying for $187 worth of items. The officers placed Alexander under arrest for shoplifting. A search of his person revealed that he was in possession of prohibited items. He was handcuffed, searched, and escorted to the patrol car.
Alexander was transported to the Hoboken Police Department for further processing. At police HQ, he was searched in more detail. He was charged with shoplifting under 2C:20-11B(2) and also charged under 2C:36-2. He was subsequently remanded to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

The summary of events was based on records that are “open to public view through open access to public records” as defined in the Salzano case. In Ramos v. Flowers, 429 N.J. Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
