Drunk Woman Lies Repeatedly During DUI Arrest in Lake Bluff, IL

On August 1, 2024 at approximately 1:31 AM, Officer Joshua Rosenberg with the Lake Bluff Police Department observed a 2007 Toyota Rav4 being driven in an erratic manner on Rockland Road. He began following the vehicle and observed the driver exceed the speed limit and turn without signaling. As the vehicle headed northbound on Waukegan Road, he activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop and the driver eventually stopped in the vicinity of Foster Avenue. After the driver pulled over, Officer Rosenberg initiated contact with the driver, who was identified as Tania.

Tania seemed incoherent while exhibiting indicators of impairment. She told Officer Rosenberg that she was headed back home to Schaumburg after leaving a friend’s house in Ringwood, but the GPS in her car indicated that she was headed to Fountain Square. She was also asked which bar she was coming from because she was wearing a wristband, but she only admitted to being at the McHenry County Fair earlier that day. She also admitted to consuming alcohol earlier that evening. Based on the odor of alcohol and her inconsistent statements, Tania was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises.

The first field sobriety exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Tania did not touch heel-to-toe on each step, turned improperly, and failed to keep her arms at her sides. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Tania failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and put her foot down before the test was complete.

Following the field sobriety exercises, Officer Rosenberg offered Tania an opportunity to take a Preliminary Breath Test (PBT), but she declined. Based on her erratic driving, her admission to consuming alcohol, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Officer Rosenberg placed Tania under arrest for driving under the influence. After she was handcuffed, Tania was searched by Officer Madison Polster with the neighboring Lake Forest Police Department and placed in the patrol car. Sergeant Alex Van Der Linden located a pipe while searching her vehicle incident to arrest. The officers seemed to believe that Tania was a “working girl” and that was probably why she was lying to the officers.

Tania was transported by Officer Rosenberg to the Lake Bluff Police Department for further processing. Officer Rosenberg read Tania the Warning to Motorist form as well as her Miranda rights, but she refused to speak with him. When the machine was ready to accept breath samples, Tania refused to speak so Officer Rosenberg interpreted her silence as a refusal. Tania was later fingerprinted and photographed before being released to her husband pending her court appearance in the Lake County Courthouse on August 23, 2024. Tania was cited for driving under the influence - alcohol (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(2)), speeding 11-14 over (625 ILCS 5/11-601(b)(2)), and improper lane usage (625 ILCS 5/11-709(a)).
