Man Becomes Irate With Officers After Stealing from Hoboken ShopRite

Around 5:55 PM on December 29, 2024, Officers Jessica Pizanie and Christopher Barral with the Hoboken Police Department were dispatched to a report of a shoplifting at ShopRite on 900 Madison Street. Officer Pizanie first arrived on scene, walked upstairs to the loss prevention office, and made contact with the alleged shoplifter. She was informed that this man was being detained by store security after attempting to shoplift multiple items including salmon and scallops.

The man was identified as 57-year-old Douglas Kissel. Officer Pizanie told Douglas that he was under arrest, and he became irate as she started to place the handcuffs on him. Officer Barral then subdued him and he was placed in handcuffs. He was escorted down the stairs and placed in the patrol car. Officer Barral transported him to the Hoboken Police Department for further processing. Douglas was charged with shoplifting under 2C:20-11B(1) and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

Court records indicate that Douglas has previously been arrested for shoplifting in Secaucus, New Jersey on December 9, 2021. He has also been arrested for robbery under 2C:15-1A(3) in Northfield, New Jersey on September 6, 2008 as well as robbery under 2C:18-2A(1) in Manasquan, New Jersey on August 8, 2002.
