YouTube Description
as posted by the channelAround 1:22 AM on February 1, 2022, Officer Gregory Barlaug with the Tampa Police Department observed a white 2020 Hyundai Sonata running through a stop sign. As the driver proceeded to enter the Centro Ybor Parking Garage on 15th Street, he noticed that the vehicle struck a curb. He activated his lights to initiate a traffic stop, and the driver stopped near the gate. The officer made contact with the driver, who was identified as Sandy.
As he was speaking with her, he observed indicators of impairment and detected the odor of alcohol. She told the officer that she was texting and that her friend was waiting for her. She also admitted to consuming alcohol earlier that evening. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Sandy was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises.
Officer Barlaug started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Sandy did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and turned improperly. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Sandy failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion or count in the correct sequence.
Based on her traffic infractions, her indicators of impairment, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol earlier that evening, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Sandy was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. Sandy was transported by Officer Barlaug to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for further processing. At the jail, she refused to submit to a breath test. She was charged with a DUI (316.193(1)) and eventually released pending her court appearance.
