What the Ship! New Port Czar Appointed/FMC Want More Control; Poor US Port Efficiency; Europe Bans Russian Seaborne Oil Imports; Ukrainian Wheat Ton-Miles; and Maersk First International Relay Shipment in China

What's Going on With Shipping?

May 31, 2022

In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - former merchant mariner and maritime historian at Campbell University - discusses the major issues and topics facing global shipping as of May 31, 2022. First, the White House and Transportation Department have appointed the former commander of US Transportation Command - General Stephen Lyons - as a replacement for John Porcari as the White House Port Envoy. At the same time as he is appointed, we have renewed emphasis on the role of the Federal Maritime Commission and a new administrator for the Maritime Administration. Second, the report card is in and US ports are the least efficient in the world. Third, renewed legislation by the European Commission to ban the seaborne import of Russian oil. Fourth, a lot of discussion on the issue of food and wheat coming out of Ukraine, but few are talking about the issue of ton-miles in the transportation of bulk. Finally, the initiation in China of international relay shipping by Maersk.
