What's Going on With Shipping
November 5, 2022
In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - maritime historian at Campbell University and former merchant mariner - discusses the Top 5 Maritime Stories as of November 5, 2022. First, we examine the containership market, particularly Maersk's concerns about 'Dark Clouds on the Horizon' while at the same time they register record profits as holiday spending is on track for a record year. Second, we look at the crude and product market with an emphasis on the the impact Russian sanctions will have on the industry, along with the G7 market cap. Third, the war in Ukraine and extreme weather conditions - both droughts and floods - are having repercussions on the transport and cost of grain. Fourth, the demand for LNG in Europe has ships waiting off the coast as prices increase and finally, we discuss the growing efforts for national shipping fleets and Matson's decision to add three new ships to their fleet.
