Speaking during a House Rules Committee as part of the impeachment process, Rep. Norma J. Torres, D-Calif., said Central American countries including Honduras and Guatemala, should serve as a warning to the U.S. about what can happen when corruption is allowed to go unchecked. “I never want to see a day where American families have to send their children to live outside of the country because of public corruption,” said Torres, who immigrated to the U.S. from Guatemala as a child. “The future health of our democracy is not assured. We can slide back to tyranny one corrupt act at a time,” she added. The House Rules Committee met on Dec. 17 to determine the rules that will govern the full House vote on the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The two articles charge Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The vote is slated for Dec. 18.
