16:33Now PlayingAttorney General Jeff Sessions has recently stated that he wants to get tougher on crime by urging prosecutors and judges to seek maximum sentences except for very rare instances as it relates to drugs and drug traffickers. This stance has come about as a result of the current epidemic of drug addiction and the uptick in drug related crime across the country. Many people have condemned this notion as being “irresponsible” and also “dumb on crime” which is what Eric Holder, former Attorney General, said when asked about Session’s stance. Rand Paul has alluded to Session’s policy being racist by saying that harsh drug sentencing “disproportionately” and “unfairly” affects minorities. Others have said that Sessions’ proposal for policy change makes a lot of sense because drug offenders and traffickers have a high recidivism rate.
Barack Obama unveiled the “Fair Sentencing Act” in 2010 with the purpose of lessening mandatory minimum sentencing introduced in the 1994 crime bill and years prior that targeted crack cocaine with higher penalties than powder cocaine. This Act and other measures in general created leniency as it relates to drug crime sentencing. The positive effect of this is lower sentences for the criminal. While the negative effect being that people must be subject to these people when they come home. The term “non-violent drug offender” is a misnomer. Just because someone is in jail on a non-violent drug charge does not mean they are not violent or a danger to society in general. Wendell Callahan, a man who was released under the 2010 act signed into law by President Obama, immediately killed his ex-girlfriend and her two children upon release. Does that sound like a non-violent drug offender to you?
