Family Dollar Looting Post Hurricane Florence Highlights Elephant in the Room

After Hurricane Florence swept through Wilmington, North Carolina, a Family Dollar in the city was looted for trivial items like soda pop. Some would immediately point to the fact that Wilmington was surrounded by water and essentially became an island with limited resources. While this may be true, it is also true that the particular location of the looting was not flooded. People walked across the street from a housing project to loot the store. The video shows the scene … and there was not much, if any, standing water on the ground. Electricity in the city was being turned back on and there were cars driving around which means the streets in that particular area were not necessarily impassible.

Beyond just negative optics, the looting points out a problem with low income or “ghetto” areas that is often complained about - the lack of investment. More specifically, this case points out why low-income/ghetto areas do not receive much investment in the form of retail locations. Why would a store set up shop in a high-risk place? Not only would there be an obvious risk for theft, there is also the risk for robbery, arson, and more. People often complain about the lack of resources in low income areas but those same people usually don’t look into the reasons why this is so.

The owners of the particular Family Dollar were on the scene and had apparently asked the police to stand down. Maybe they thought they’d be able to file an insurance claim and cash out that way. But the police eventually did intervene and people were arrested. Possibly because the owners realized they’d need police reports to claim insurance on stolen items or because the police had a duty to protect the city. Maybe both reasons are true maybe none. Either way it goes, this case is a prime example of why low income areas do not have resources like other areas and it goes far beyond cheap Chinese goods in a ghetto corner store.
