11:37Now PlayingDonald Trump and the White House administration are behind a bill with bipartisan support that supports prison reform. H.R. 5682, known as the FIRST STEP Act is an acronym for Formerly Incarcerated Reenter Society Transformed Safely Transitioning Every Person Act.
FIRST STEP Act's purpose is to not only prepare current prisoners for the outside world in a better way than they currently are, but to also provide better treatment of prisoners while they are incarcerated. More resources will be dedicated towards job training in jail, more "good time" will be given out to well-behaved prisoners, ID cards will be given to individuals upon their release from jail, and much more.
Some Democrats in the House and Senate are not totally in favor with the bill, especially earlier iterations of it because it does not totally address mandatory minimums. A recent revision of the bill does, in fact, do that... but maybe not to the expectations of far leftists such as Maxine Waters and the like. Either way it goes, there is bipartisan support for this bill. Barack Obama, the nation's "first black President" never did anything close. Interesting how conservatives seem to always be on the right side of history when it comes to things like this.
