11:30Now PlayingDonald Trump released a statement affirming partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia after the CIA said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman personally ordered the killing of former US resident and journalist, Jamal Khashoggi. Khashoggi was a controversial figure in KSA due to his views against Wahhabism and the current Saudi regime. He was labeled as an “enemy of the state” and also a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Those factors about Khashoggi did not influence Trump’s decision. It was more of a practical one.
The CIA’s findings may or may not be true. If they are true, they shouldn’t be what determines the relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United States crumbling. Many are pushing for Trump to impose sanctions on the Saudis. KSA has already stated that if any sanctions are imposed upon them, they will retaliate. It wouldn’t necessarily be with any type of arms, but it would be with their most important resource: oil. Although the United States is a top oil producer in the world, so is Saudi Arabia. They could damage the global price of oil to the point where it would wreck the economy of the world, including the United States.
Furthermore, Saudi Arabia is an ally of the United States. US Military bases are stationed in Saudi and they are critical launching points to fight terror in the Middle East. Iran is the bigger fish to fry here and they are already haters of both Saudi and the United States. Creating another enemy in that region would hurt not only the United States, but also the rest of the world, especially the Middle East including our other ally, Israel. People involved with the alleged killing of Khashoggi have already been detained and are facing the death penalty in Saudi. Trump has imposed travel bans on those who were allegedly involved. Nothing more should be done, for the sake of peace on Earth.
