9:23Now PlayingNews media in the United States, and possibly in Europe, have characterized the protests/riots in France as simply being a response to gas price hikes across their nation. While a 14% increase in regular gas and 23% increase in diesel over the course of 12 months may have been a catalyst, the issues in France are much bigger than gas.
We have to start from the beginning to even understand why these protests are happening.
French President Emmanuel Macron decided to raise taxes on gas to discourage his citizens from using fossil fuels in an attempt to fight climate change. Europeans already pay an exorbitant amount for gas, but these hikes took them over the equivalent of 6$ per gallon USD. Some people in Paris may be able to forego their personal vehicle and ride the train, but what about others who live in the countryside, away from this type of public transportation infrastructure?
The result of Macron’s energy policy has been a mess that appears to have been the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. Now, people are in the street protesting not only the gas, but a variety of other things. Ambulance workers not being paid enough, some police and regular citizens not appreciating the dangerous environment that unchecked “migrants” have brought into their country, and more. Right wing, left wing, all wings are there.
Has the situation gotten out of control? Maybe. The French Government has said they will suspend the gas hike for six months. Most likely in an attempt to cool the situation down. The million dollar question is… will this tactic work? Most likely not since the hike will still go forward and also because people are still displeased with Emmanuel Macron’s presidency in general.
