Joining Shay Sayss today is Sandhya Raman, health care reporter at Roll Call, to talk to us about the Britney Spears conservatorship.
Sandhya Raman wrote a piece on how congress is reacting to the Free Britney movement. What does the movement mean for the future of pop stars?
Politically, it’s been a bipartisan issue. You have conservative figures like Ted Cruz tweeting out #FreeBritney and looking at the constitutional freedom of choice issue, and not having control of your life is unconstitutional. And then you have more liberal figures like Elizabeth Warren who are looking at it from a women’s rights issue and reproductive issue when Britney Spears said in court that she has an IUD and is not allowed to remove it. All in all, many many figures in politics are looking at how detrimental the Britney Spears conservatorship really is.
Recently, the wealth management firm who is the co-conservator asked to leave. Is this a good sign?
It’s tricky to say. Even in the past few days, the case has changed. Speaking more broadly it’ll be interesting to see how this affects conservatorship rights and legal issues in general.
Will the Britney Spears conservatorship set a precedent for cases similar?
This is also tricky to say as this case is so rare, but we’ll all stay tuned in as the news will change very quickly.
