Facebook and its other products Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus, were all down for almost an entire day last week. People on social media were not happy. With so much power over all these products, many thought Facebook wouldn’t have these kinds of huge issues.
Thanks to the WhatsApp outage, the messaging app Telegram gained 70 million new users logging in.
But not only Facebook had a huge issue last week, so did Twitch. Twitch went down for a few hours the following day but in this case, people weren’t able to stream but creator payouts were also leaked. These platforms host millions if not billions of users daily and they have a whole load of our personal information.
Will Telegram and other competitors step in where Facebook and Twitch are falling short? Or will the hackers just go to them next?
This is why it is important to not have one institution have too much power. One disruption caused so much chaos. We have seen recently how a company’s mistakes or issues can open up space for a competitor.
Back in February, Robinhood had an entire scandal with meme stocks and restricted trading which many accused them of looking out for the rich guy and not standing up for the small businesses. This is where the platform Public came in and was able to raise $220 million. Public became an alternative to a big player like Robinhood.
The same could happen with Facebook or Twitch. Maybe not in the short term but perhaps in the long term.
