Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced that he is rolling out a series of changes to the way that the military addresses harassment among its branches. These changes are coming after cases like Vanessa Guillen.
Her body was shortly discovered after her family reported her missing. Guillen reported misconduct before she went missing and her family called out the military and asked they handle misconduct differently in the future.
Currently, when someone reports an incident, the report goes through that person’s chain of command, which means their boss will handle the investigation. The changes will put new outside investigators in charge of these cases.
The plan has four installments and should be fully installed by 2027.
