Here are some passenger rights to know if your flight gets delayed or canceled this season.
Refunds. The U.S. Department of Transportation requires refunds when a flight gets canceled no matter the reason. Airlines may try to give you a voucher or travel credit, but if you want your money back, you have the right to request a refund.
If you have a delayed flight, you can get a refund depending on the airline’s definition of a delay. For Delta Airlines and Spirit Airlines, a significant delay is two or more hours, but for American Airlines, it is anything over 90 minutes.
If you’re at the airport when your flight gets delayed or canceled, instead of waiting in the long customer service line, visit the Self-Service Tablets or use your phone to change the flight yourself. This would be much faster than the customer service line.
For hotel accommodations, the airlines will only pay for hotels due to a delayed or canceled flight for the next day if the cancellation wasn’t their fault. For reasons like weather or air traffic issues. If it is their fault, the airline will only pay for your hotel, if you don’t live in the city. Therefore, it is important to request hotel accommodations right away, since airport hotels sell out fast when there these problems happen.
Learn to stand up for yourself when airline issues happen. You have rights, learn them and use them.
