In 2020, the Signal For Help campaign was started by the Canadian Women’s Foundation and has spread across TikTok to all of its users. TikTok users began giving tips for seeking out help when in distress or to indicate violence at home in a nonverbal way. The signal was recently used in Kentucky when a 61-year-old man was arrested for holding an underage girl hostage in his car. A motorist saw the hand signal and remembered what it meant from 2020.
The signal starts by putting your hand up, palm forward, tucking your thumb, and closing your hand. Not only is TikTok teaching us the latest trends, but it is also teaching us how to save lives. TikTok even has a trend where people made fake phone call videos that someone can play as if they were on the phone when they are feeling unsafe. The video tells you what to say out loud giving people around you a hint that someone knows where you are
