While Gen X has families and careers already established, Gen Z and millennials are balancing work life and aren't quite ready to settle down just yet. Over the last decade, Gen Z and millennial pet owners have accounted for 41% of today's adults, and according to research conducted by Packaged Facts, the rates in pet ownership have more than doubled since 2018.
They also claim that the rise in pet ownership is attributable to the fact that both cohorts are graduating from college and entering the workforce. They are not, however, prepared to settle down and establish a family. Instead, how about a pet?
According to researchers, millennials' strong bond with their pets acts as a kind of rehearsal for having children. From pet birthdays to Instagram trending topics to pet outfits featured on TikTok's For You pages, millennials and Gen Z are taking a social approach to pet ownership.
