One of the things Philip did with his company was to issue shares in their real estate portfolio, and then individuals bought a lot of them, which is known as equity crowdfunding. Crowdfunding was traditionally connected with Kickstarter. You have a fantastic product and you want people to donate money to support it.
Nowadays, equity crowdfunding is more equivalent to a direct listing IPO, but without all of the complications of going public. Basically, this is where the general public may invest in your firm. Let's assume you own a million-dollar corporation and you want to sell 10% of your shares. Rather than going to a single investor with 100,000, you may sell that 100,000 in $1,000 chunks to 100 of your greatest clients. As a result, in addition to supporting and loving your product, they are also a co-owner of your company.
You may utilize it to become public, so to speak, by allowing the public to invest in your company as well. You may create a tighter relationship with your most loyal clients, almost like a VIP Program where individuals can buy a piece of your company.
What it does is bring in a different type of capital that isn't from a bank, a large angel investor, or a venture capital firm that will take a lot of control. Instead, it should come from your most trusted supporters, who are the ones that helped bring money in the door through sales.
However, it is vital to remember that equity crowdfunding was traditionally utilized for early-stage companies that were unable to obtain funds elsewhere. What you can do here is, if you have some traction and a more mature business, it's a terrific way to get people in the door and something that they believe in that's really performing and can produce returns down the road.
So what are your thoughts on crowdfunding? Something that you can do for your business? Let us know in the comments.
