If you bought a cheap bike from a big box store, you could notice that it's breaking down, and if you take it in to be repaired, you'll be disappointed to learn that many of them can't be fixed.
Mechanics are pushing big-box stores to stop offering bikes that are designed to fail, according to a Vice news story. Many bikes under $500 and almost all bikes under $200 are low-cost Chinese bikes that don't survive long.
Worse, they're often so badly put together that they can't be fixed. These low-cost bikes are becoming a huge issue in our economy. It's all about short-termism, and corporate profits are based on how quickly raw materials are turned into trash.
This is a disaster for the environment, and it also makes no sense for customers like us. Our fixation on obtaining a good price is turning out to be the worst deal ever, from fast fashion to throw-away devices to these garbage bikes. We can't keep having an economy based on garbage imports.
As you can see by all of the shortages, we can clearly see that it's not a good model. We should buy fewer, higher-quality items that will last longer, which is just common sense. Also when possible, sourcing local and supporting North American manufacturing is a big win.
