The owners and the players' association were unable to reach an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement when the old one expired, resulting in the lockout.
A collective bargaining agreement, or CBA, determines how much each team is permitted to spend, how much players are paid, and a slew of other financial issues that make baseball possible. The owners made it obvious right away that they had no intention of giving up too much in negotiations.
The owners delayed nearly 40 days to send their first offer after the old CBA expired, and they also had the option of playing this season under the old CBA while negotiating a new one. They also turned down that choice. The owners are represented by Baseball's Commissioner Rob Manfred.
He established an arbitrary deadline to reach a new agreement after arguing that canceling games would be detrimental to baseball. They were unable to reach an agreement after seven days of negotiating. Instead of postponing the made-up deadline, he chose to cancel the games.
So why don't the owners and commissioner seem to mind if the season is cut short? The reason for this is that these teams are owned by billionaires and millionaires. Some people are concerned with winning and becoming a successful franchise. Others simply want to manage the team like any other asset in their portfolio: save costs and increase earnings.
Some owners let good, expensive players walk to make room for a team of less expensive players. Others want to eliminate some regular-season games and replace them with playoff games, which are more profitable.
The owners are making a killing, while lower leaguers are struggling to make ends meet, ticket costs are skyrocketing, and the sport is falling behind big competitors like football and basketball.
