Classic generation names such as Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z may be familiar to you.
First, there are the Baby Boomers, who were born between 1946 and 1964, after WWII. They constructed the suburbs and witnessed the moon landing as children, and they are now far more likely than any other living generational group to be wealthy and influential.
The next generation is Generation X, which was born between 1965 and 1980. They grew up during the Cold War, witnessing their once-hippie parents begin to discuss why they needed to go to college and start working.
Millennials, also known as Gen Y, were born between 1981 and 1996, during the Reaganomics era, the commercialization of cell phones, and the AOL era. When the first iPhone was released, the youngest of them were 11 years old.
Finally, Gen Z refers to people born between 1997 and 2012. They grew up with the internet, autotuned music, memes, and social media platforms at their fingertips. Their environment was so different from that of prior generations that when elders tried to tell them what to do, they just said, 'Okay boomer.'
But what if you fall anywhere in the middle of these generations? You might be a Zillennial if you're one of them, and the term refers to young adults who don't identify with either generation.
Between 1993 and 1998, Zillenials were born. What makes these years so important? Zillennials were born before smartphones and social media. Except if you include Palm Pilots, which no one should.
They witnessed how technology has changed the world. They did, however, live in an era when technology was not ubiquitous. They're closer to Gen Z in terms of age and interests. However, their early years were more akin to that of older millennials.
Could micro generations become more common as our relationship with technology continues to develop? Only time will tell.
