As people return to work and leave the house, there are increased concerns about public transit safety. You may be affected by circumstances beyond your control.
When you're late for work and ride the bus or train, you can miss it. It may be delayed due to technical or traffic concerns, but safety is something that a city can regulate.
Granted, there will always be freak incidents, but making concerted steps to alleviate the city's homelessness, drug, and crime problems can make transit significantly safer.
Things appear to be getting better. In 2019, there were 4700 reported safety accidents on public transportation in New York, for example. This figure shrank by nearly 16 percent in 2021.
Yes, if driving a car is the only other option, public transportation is still the safest option. Per mile traveled, public transportation is ten times safer than driving. Overall, public transit appears to be the safest mode of transportation in a city.
Despite alarming headlines, public transit appears to be improving its crime control.
