Latest In The Ukraine War
It's now been a month since Russia invaded Ukraine and the Russian military is fighting ugly. But the Ukrainian military is punching back and defending itself. Well, Russia has been bombarding the city of Mariupol and they tried to force Ukraine to surrender it. But Ukraine's President Zelensky told the Russians to go pound sand and even after the Russian military seized a suburb of Ukraine's capital, Kiev, the Ukrainian military took it back.
We don't have good numbers but NATO says the Russian military has suffered between seven and fifteen thousand deaths over the last four weeks..
Just to put that in context for you. The US military lost 4,400 soldiers in Iraq and 2,400 soldiers in Afghanistan over the course of 20 years. In addition to that, the Ukrainian military has killed six top Russian military generals. We don't know exactly how many losses Ukraine has suffered, but we do know that 3.5 million people have left Ukraine as refugees.
While all this destruction and devastation is happening. Ukrainian and Russian delegations are holding diplomatic negotiations in Turkey. Russia has made a list of demands to stop the violence, including guarantees that Ukraine not join NATO, that it'll be military neutral and also that it give up part of its land to Russia, including the Donbas in the east and Crimea.
The US Government has also officially declared that the Russian military has committed war crimes. Yes, there are rules in war. And if you break those rules, you are a war criminal. So for example, intentionally targeting civilians is a war crime. And the importance of making that declaration means that you're gonna help build a legal case proving the war crimes so that the criminal can face trial at the International Criminal Court one day.
China And Ukraine War
The US And Europe are trying to get China to press Putin to stop the war. President biden and China’s President Xi had a two hour call last week and we didn't get many details. Other than that, Biden said China would face serious consequences if it gives military aid to Russia. Publicly, it looks like china is taking a backseat.
How are they viewing the situation in Ukraine and can we get them to press Putin to stop this war? So we're not going to be able to get the Chinese to get Putin to stop The best we can do is limit the degree of their assistance.
Basically the chinese are trying to balance three competing objectives. Number one is to maintain their alignment with Russia which they believe is essential to balancing US power.
Number two, they want to be seen as holding firm to the most sacrosanct principle in their foreign policy which is protecting sovereignty and territorial integrity.
And then third they want to minimize the damage to their relationship with the US and with the EU are their top two trading partners.
So as they try and figure out how to balance it, they want to not oppose Russia but they're debating about how much to support them. I
How do you think they view all this in the context of Taiwan?
Given the global response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Chinese have sat up and noticed that their ability to conduct a similar type of invasion at some future point is a lot harder because the transatlantic community is united. It's now connected with the transpacific community. Global sanctions are far more extensive and costly than ever before. And the Russians face real problems with their you know military invasion and it was just a land invasion. The chinese have to conduct you know an amphibious landing and over water invasion.
