Welcome back to Bold TV with Ashton Cohen. Be sure to like, comment, and subscribe to Bold TV for all things Bold.
The argument is frequently made that because social media firms are private, they are free to censor anyone's speech and deplatform anybody they want, and the First Amendment only protects citizens from government activity.
But that is entirely incorrect.
Here's the thing: we know for a fact that Democrats in Congress, and more recently, the Biden White House, have repeatedly threatened social media companies like Facebook and Twitter with penalties and investigations if they didn't deplatform and censor certain people and speech that Democrats didn't like.
This is also illegal.
The Supreme Court has often stated that the government cannot force private parties to perform things that the government is not permitted to undertake.
It is unlawful for the government to use social media platforms to stifle people and ideas that Washington politicians disagree with.
However, this type of stuff has been going on for years and is really alarming regardless of political affiliation.
You don't want politicians choosing what kind of speech is permitted because someone in authority may one day decide that your beliefs are dangerous.
However, there is some positive news in this regard.
We've finally seen someone successfully oppose big tech government censorship.
Alex Berenson, a former New York Times journalist who was permanently suspended by Twitter in August, recently sued the company, and they agreed to revive his account as part of a broader deal.
Twitter first justified deplatforming Berenson on the grounds that he promoted misinformation about the COVID vaccine, but the company backtracked after Berenson retrieved documents proving that Twitter removed him on orders from the Biden administration.
So Berenson's victory is something we should all be happy about.
Social media sites are no longer just places where people upload stupid cat videos.
They've evolved into modern town squares where we can argue our points of view and be exposed to fresh information ideas.
Let us not forget that a free society cannot exist without the free interchange of ideas.
And today, the vast majority of these ideas and significant thoughts take place on the major Internet platforms where the majority of the human population now congregates.
We must demand a stop to the censoring methods supported by governments and major technology companies.
It's illegal, immoral, and contradicts everything this country stands for.
