Although additional brain regions, such as the cerebellum, are affected by ADHD, most research has focused on the prefrontal cortex, which is the brain region intimately involved in executive functions such as selective attention, working memory, impulse control, and emotional regulation.
Genetic factors contribute to the prefrontal cortex responding differently in those with ADHD, compared to non-ADHD controls. Certain anatomical and neurochemical aspects of the prefrontal cortex make it particularly prone to injury, and explain why so many conditions, like PTSD, anxiety, and depression, replicate a number of symptoms of ADHD.
