Main Chapters:

Melatonin, a natural hormone, has been helping humans fall asleep for hundreds of thousands of years. But the last decade has seen a marked increase in the use of melatonin pills and gummies to help people fall asleep. Ingestion of melatonin is now the most frequent substance reported to US poison control centers. (Most overdoses are benign, but at least two deaths have been reported.)

Sleep disorders, particularly delayed and inconsistent sleep onset, are common among those with ADHD. Melatonin can help improve and advance the onset of sleep in youth and adults with ADHD. Sleep benefits occur whether or not the individuals are taking ADHD medications or not. We have almost no data indicating whether melatonin supplements result in improvement in daytime ADHD symptoms, but it is quite unlikely to cause harm.
