Agomelatine is an antidepressant, approved in Europe and Australia but not in the US, that works unlike any other antidepressant. It strongly activates the two melatonin receptors, and has a much weaker effect blocking the serotonin receptor, which is thought to increase prefrontal norepinephrine and dopamine. Numerous studies indicate that it works as well as other antidepressants, and is better tolerated due to fewer individuals having side effects. Two small studies and several case reports suggest that agomelatine may also reduce symptoms of ADHD.
