Nearly 100 people gathered in the Harwood Elementary School gym on Wednesday and Thursday night as we spoke with candidates running for county commission, prosecutor, and fire commission.
We also interviewed the sheriff, who is running unopposed, and District 2 County Commissioner Scott Hancock, who is also running unopposed.
The town halls were part of a series of forums featuring candidates running for political office in East Idaho. The Idaho primary will be held May 17.
Five candidates are running for Jefferson County prosecutor after Robin Dunn announced he was retiring. Dunn has served in the position for over 30 years.
The candidates include:

PAUL BUTIKOFER
STEVEN DALLING
ASHLEY GRAHAM
CHRIS SCHMIDT
All of the candidates, except Steven Dalling, agreed to sit down with EastIdahoNews.com reporter Nate Eaton. They were given 60 seconds for an opening and closing statement. They also answered nearly 10 questions from the audience and the following questions posed by EastIdahoNews.com:
Many residents say the current prosecutor’s office cannot be trusted and there is no transparency in the department. Is this a fair assessment and how do you plan to restore public trust?
The current prosecutor has been serving over 30 years. What immediate and long-term changes do you plan to make in the office?
What type of relationship will you promote with the county sheriff’s office and how will you work to streamline criminal investigations and prosecutions?
Many voters are disgusted with politics. Why should they trust you?
