For far too long, the weight of responsibility when it comes to guys' struggles with lust has been placed on girls to wear longer skirts, higher shirts, and make sure their brothers in Christ don't stumble. There's nothing wrong with modesty, but there is a problem with shaming girls for what they're wearing in the name of modesty, and an even bigger problem with teaching guys that they're incapable of self-control. In an effort to promote purity, so much emphasis has been placed on modesty, and not enough emphasis placed on self-control. However, when Jesus addressed lust, he placed the responsibility where it should be, on the guys (see Matthew 5:29). If you're a guy, and you're struggling with lust, you're not alone. You're also not a victim to your feelings of lost. You can be a victor. You can overcome your struggles with lust, but it starts with owning your own growth, taking personal responsibility, and recognizing that you're in control, you're not at the mercies of what everyone around you wears. It's time to address this mistake in the purity movement and call guys to a higher standard so that the question is never again asked, "what was she wearing?" when a girl is the victim of sexual violence.
