Greece was abandoned by the Nazis in October 1944 without much of a fight. The Nazis withdrew due to a combination of military setbacks, strategic considerations, and the changing tide of World War II. After the successful D-Day landings in June 1944 and the Soviet breakthrough on the Eastern Front, the Axis powers faced increasing pressure on multiple fronts. In Greece, the German forces were stretched thin, and they encountered fierce resistance from Greek partisans, supported by the British. Additionally, the strategic importance of Greece diminished for the Germans.

With the Soviet Union advancing from the east and Allied forces closing in from the west, the Nazis needed to consolidate their defenses and prioritize more strategically significant areas. The withdrawal from Greece was, therefore, a pragmatic decision to preserve resources and focus on critical fronts. On several islands the Germans remained till the end of WW2 in Europe and the German withdrawal didn't lead to peace in Greece as the Greek Civil War erupted between communist and royalist forces.
