0:48Now PlayingDuring the 80 Years War where the Dutch revolted against Spain. William of Orange used the Prince’s Flag which was Orange – White – Blue. After the conflict ended, mid-17th century, the flag was changed to Red – White –Blue. Known as the States Flag. Not the exact flag as today.
In 1795 the Batavian Republic was created, a French vassal state in the aftermath of the French Revolution. In 1806 the Kingdom of Holland was established which was later incorporated into the First French Empire.
Around this time the current Dutch flag was shaped with a darker shade of blue. First for the navy of the Batavian Republic. When The Netherlands became the Kingdom of Holland, under rule of king Louis Bonaparte (brother of Napoleon), the flag became the same as the flag of today.
When after Napoleon's defeat the United Kingdom of the Netherlands was created they kept this flag.
