What followed was a naming dispute with Greece. Greece objected to the use of the name Macedonia, as it has a northern region with the same name and feared territorial claims. This led to a compromise in 2019, resulting in the country's official renaming to North Macedonia. The change aimed to ease tensions and foster better relations between the two nations. The agreement included Greece lifting its objections to North Macedonia's NATO and EU aspirations. The new name reflects the country's northern geographical location, distinguishing it from the Greek region of Macedonia and resolving a longstanding diplomatic issue.
